I would really like to congratulate you for posting this wonderful response.

MihirThe Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01060590167867977158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22165230.post-24061731427689678712009-06-02T01:07:10.123-07:002009-06-02T01:07:10.123-07:00Barry,

It's at least equally about reasserting dominance and vanquishing feelings of powerless. Pretty much anytime we resort to punishment, the punishment is not only a means, but an end in itself.

Bystander, thanks for the link. Clarke's article was spot-on, and so (as always) was Digby's analysis.

Cheers,
BarryBarry Eislerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17785333622697500192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22165230.post-66437266274828087812009-05-31T06:39:23.602-07:002009-05-31T06:39:23.602-07:00Correction:

Many in the White House feared that their inaction prior to the attacks would be publicly detailed before the next vote -- which is why they resisted the 9/11 commission -- and that a second attack would eliminate any chance of a second Bush term. You've got some excellent passages in here...Barry,

You've got some excellent passages in here. My favorites are these:

Imagine you're a cop. You come across a dead body with a bullet hole in the forehead, and there's a guy standing over the corpse holding a smoking gun. You want to arrest the guy with the gun, and your partner says, "Hang on a minute there, pard. Can you honestly say that killing is never, ever justified?" This is exactly what torture apologists are doing in the face of actual laws and actual facts demonstrating that those laws were violated.I think I saw this one as a deep thought on Talking Points Memo: If torture so great, why have all the countries that used it -- Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union -- been defeated by the US?"How can it be torture when we do it to our own people in military training?"... I don't know. How can it be rape when married couples do the same thing all the time at home? How can it be slavery when people do the same thing for wages? That said, it was NOT your books that kept us safe. It so happens that I changed brands of socks on September 12, 2001, and I am confident that THAT is the reason we have been free of further attacks. (Except of course for the still-unsolved anthrax attacks, but apparently, those don't count.)

Cheers,
Paul
Sensen No SenPBIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05643553811799195520noreply@blogger.com
