Today's the day -- the new Dox short story, THE KHMER KILL, is available now!

For former Marine sniper Dox, a long-range hit in Cambodia was supposed to be just business as usual.  But when you find yourself mixed up with rogue intelligence operations, gorgeous bar girls, and the world's worst human-trafficking heart of darkness, business is anything but usual.  And making it personal is the most dangerous business of all.

THE KHMER KILL is published by Thomas & Mercer, the good people who brought you THE DETACHMENT, and so will be available exclusively through the Kindle Store.  It's not DRM encumbered, so owners of Nooks and other non-Kindle digital readers, fear not -- you can read it on your device of choice.

Sadly, there won't be a paper version (at least until I've written enough short stories to do an anthology) because there's no cost-effective way to distribute a short story in paper.

And here are some photos of locations in the novel taken by your intrepid correspondent.

Enjoy -- and thanks for reading the stories.

  1. Barry, I hate using the Kindle app on my Mac. Bought Khmer Kill and The Detachment but the only options are to view them in the Kindle app.

    From Amazon:
"I'm so sorry to infom you that currently you can read content you buy from the Kindle Store (such as books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs) on most Kindle devices or Kindle reading apps registered to your Amazon.com account.

Kindle Store content is not currently viewable on any other e-Reader devices."

No other option to save to. Ahhh!

  2. Jack, my sincere apologies. Like The Detachment, there was an initial mistake with The Khmer Kill by which it was briefly DRMed. Amazon has corrected the problem and the DRM has been removed. If you downloaded a DRM version, though, here's the solution—and my sincere apologies for the glitch.

"All they need to do is delete the file from their local application/device (Kindle for the PC, Kindle for the Mac, etc) and then re-download the book from their Amazon account to get the DRM free version. If people have questions, they can call Amazon Kindle CS team at 866-321-8851. We posted an article about it so that our CS reps are aware of the situation and how to fix the problem."

Again, I apologize for the screw-up. Let me know if this takes care of it and how else I can help.

    Best,
    Barry

I know this isn't your fault, and I'm certain it's more frustrating for you than me, but Amazon CS just told me the book is only available for Kindle, no other version. I really like my Nook and hate reading on their Mac app, but that's what I'm doing. Thanks for the help, and the awesome work!

  4. This is strange, Jack -- I know others have (since the mistaken DRM was removed) downloaded the book and converted it using Calibre. Here's how:

    http://www.barryeisler.com/faq-digital.php

    Buy THE DETACHMENT on Amazon.
Select "Transfer via Computer" from the "Deliver to" pull-down menu on the product detail page, and save it to your computer.
Download and install the free program Calibre.
Open the Calibre program, and click ADD BOOKS in the upper left-hand corner, selecting the .azw file you just downloaded onto your computer from Amazon.
Once the ebook is in Calibre, highlight it by clicking on it, and then click on the CONVERT BOOKS tab. Select the type of file you'd like to convert it to (for Nook, choose epub).
Upload the newly created file to your e-reader of choice.

Really sorry again for the trouble.

    Best,
    Barry

  6. Thanks for that -- should be by the end of the year, when I can record The Khmer Kill, a new Delilah short story (almost done), and the new novel (done by year end) all in one visit to the studio in Michigan.
